In an emergency, you want to stop your car in the shortest possible distance. One way to insure this is to make sure that your brakes are well maintained. If your brakes feel soft or spongy or make a squealing or grinding noise, your next trip should be to a service technician. Other signs of needing brake repairs include your car pulling to one side or vibrating when apply you apply the brakes.
The most important thing you can do for your brakes is to understand them. When you press down on the brake pedal, hydraulic fluid is injected into the master cylinder. Pressure from the master cylinder is then dispensed equally to the brakes on the four wheels. The brake pads or discs are pressed against the rotors which both stop the wheels and dispense the heat generated.
